SUMMARY:Court of Valor & SafeKeepers Shrine Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Court of Valor is a monument dedicated to local servicemen who have earned valor medals while serving our country. Among some of the qualifying medals are the Purple Heart\, Bronze Star\, Silver Star\, Navy Cross\, and Distinguished Flying Cross. Prisoners of War and those who have been killed in action automatically meet the criteria for inclusion. Once accepted\, the name of the qualifying veteran is incised on the granite surface of the Court of Valor. Dedication ceremonies will be held annually until the entire monument is inscribed. \nThe feature itself consists of a granite archway over 13’ high and more than 11’ wide; over 15\,000 pounds of granite were used in its construction. Under the prominent archway is suspended an American flag\, a symbol of the freedom our patriots defended. Topping the monument is an iconic piece of steel from the World Trade Center\, weighing 3\,000 pounds and measuring 9’ 11” in length. The Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery Heritage Foundation was granted the steel by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Foundation members visited Hangar 17 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York in the spring of 2009 to select a piece of WTC steel. \nThe selected piece of WTC steel was escorted into York County with the help of the Patriot Guard Riders and the York County Sheriff’s Office on September 11\, 2009. An unveiling ceremony took place approximately two months later\, attracting more than five hundred people from the local community. As of this September 2018\, the names of 390 local veterans are featured on the Court of Valor. The SafeKeepers Shrine honors 39 York County First Responders who gave their lives in the line of duty.

SUMMARY:Court of Valor and SafeKeepers Shrine Ceremony - Ceremony will be CLOSED to the Public.
DESCRIPTION:The recent surge in COVID-19 and its new Delta Variant infections have forced us to\, once again\, review our plans for the Court of Valor ceremony.  Current news reports and public health data would indicate that we must\, for the safety of our honorees\, their families\, guests\, and participants\, amend our plans for this year’s ceremony.  From our beginning\, at the dedication of the Court of Valor in 2009\, our goal has been to honor all veterans\, especially those who\, through valor or sacrifice\, have received military medals recognizing them.  This has always kept us mindful of any health or safety concerns that our large\, public gathering might create.\nFor 2021\, we have made the following changes:\nAs some of our honorees have been waiting almost two years for this event\, the names of this year’s 18 Court of Valor honorees will be carved in the monument.\nA large public ceremony will not be conducted\, as our usual attendance of 500-600 people would create a possible safety issue\, especially for our honorees.\nAn abbreviated ceremony will be held on Sunday September 12th\, 2021 at 1:00pm\, as planned\, and live streamed on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/phcheritage).  Video of the event will be made available after the program via our website and Facebook page.\nHonorees (or applicants) are permitted to attend the ceremony\, along with their families and provisions will be made to allow for social distancing.\nAll 2021 COV honorees will be invited to attend our 2022 COV ceremony\, when we hope to return to our large public event.  Both 2021 and 2022 honorees will be recognized at the 2022 event.\nWe appreciate your understanding of these changes.  Our primary concern is the safety of our honorees and their families and our staff and program participants.  We look forward to honoring our veterans and first responders on Sept. 12 and look forward to seeing everyone in 2022.  If you have any questions or concerns\, please call 717-843-8006 or email us at info@prospecthill.org.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Ceremony for Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. John Henry Denig
DESCRIPTION:MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT TO BE REMEMBERED AT PROSPECT HILL CEMETERY \n         The First Capitol Detachment of the Marine Corps League will hold a remembrance ceremony for Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant John Henry Denig. The service will be held at Denig’s burial site at Prospect Hill Cemetery on Thursday\, August 5th\, 2021 at 10 a.m. Members of the public are invited to attend. Attendees are encouraged to park at the cemetery’s main office; signs leading to Sgt. Denig’s gravesite will be posted. Additional inquiries can be directed to organizer Dave Brady (First Capitol Detachment #521\, Marine Corps League\, York County\, PA) at 717-600-6329. In the case of excessive rain\, the ceremony will be canceled. \n         John H. Denig was born in York on September 8\, 1838. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps\, and during the Civil War served on the USS Brooklyn. His vessel was part of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron under Admiral David Farragut. Denig received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on August 5\, 1864 at Mobile Bay. Twenty-two other men aboard the Brooklyn were so honored\, including Denig and three fellow Marines. \n         Denig’s citation\, issued December 31\, 1864\, by the Navy Department as General Order Number 45\, reads: “On board the USS Brooklyn during action against rebel forts and gunboats and with the ram Tennessee\, Mobile Bay\, 5 August 1864. Despite severe damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board as enemy fire raked her decks\, Sergeant Denig fought with his gun using skill and courage throughout the furious two-hour battle which resulted in the surrender of the rebel ram Tennessee and in the damaging and destruction of batteries at Fort Morgan.” \n         The Battle of Mobile Bay was a significant victory for the Union. Mobile had been the last important port on the Gulf of Mexico east of the Mississippi River remaining in Confederate possession. Therefore\, its closure was essential in completing the blockade in that region. The Medal of Honor was created during the Civil War to recognize unusual gallantry in combat. The first recipients were Ohio soldiers\, but a few soldiers from York County would receive the medal for their heroism during the Civil War. \n          Prospect Hill Cemetery serves as the final resting place for more than 1\,000 Civil War soldiers. A second Medal of Honor recipient\, Sgt. Charles Henry Ilgenfritz\, is also buried on cemetery grounds.
