SUMMARY:Afghanistan War Flag Memorial Recreation
DESCRIPTION:Call For Volunteers ! Prospect Hill Cemetery will re-establish The Afghanistan War Flag Memorial at 9 a.m. on Saturday\, April 13\, 2019. Veterans and family members as well as volunteers from the community are encouraged to attend. American flags representing 2\,433 losses in Afghanistan will be put in place\, along with 310 state flags commemorating Pennsylvania’s fallen. The public is invited to observe and participate in this re-creation ceremony. \nThe War Flag Memorial originated in 2005. It consists of a collection of flags\, each symbolizing a soldier killed during the conflict in Afghanistan. Adjacent to the main memorial is an area filled with Pennsylvania flags to pay tribute to our fallen Pennsylvania troops. After the official U.S. government declaration in 2010 that combat operations in Iraq had ceased\, more than 4\,400 flags representing those who lost their lives in Iraq were retired. During a solemn ceremony\, a promise was made to the local Gold Star families for a permanent memorial to be built on that site. The Fallen Heroes Memorial was dedicated on Nov 10\, 2012 to forever commemorate the tremendous sacrifice made by the over 6\,600 service people lost in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
